We’re taking a break from mapping on Monday to talk about something that has been in the news lately. Many of you have heard about the Zika virus. It poses the greatest risk to pregnant women. According to Travel Weekly, the “Zika virus is suspected to be linked to microcephaly, incomplete brain development in babies, and may have caused some cases of Guillaine-Barre syndrome, in which the body's immune system attacks the nervous system, sometimes resulting in paralysis.”
A survey shows that up to 64% of travelers would cancel a trip due to this virus. At this point, I’m sure many of those travelers wished they had a travel agent to assist them in changing their travel plans. As a travel agent, you could step in and save the day by finding alternative vacation arrangements.
At Career Quest Travel Training Center, we work to teach you everything you need to know to be a successful homebased travel agent. In our online travel training, we explain the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and how their warnings will help you advise your clients of unsafe areas of travel. Situations like this show the vital role travel agents have in the tourism industry. Let Career Quest Travel Training help you begin your career as a homebased travel agent. Enroll today and get started on a new and exciting, rewarding career.

CQ graduate Joanne R. writes, “Thanks Nancy to you and your staff. I am a retired operating room nurse. I owned 4 assisted living homes. I also am retired from that business. I travel several times a year. At age 79 I look forward to my new career in the travel industry. I shall keep you posted on my success as a travel agent. I enjoyed your Home Based Travel course, it was very educational. If I meet anyone interested in becoming a travel agent, i shall recommend your course.”
It’s another Mapping on Monday adventure as we move on to the letter D and our next destination – the Dominican Republic. The Dominican Republic is located on the island of Hispaniola. Its average annual temperature is 77°F, and it is home to some of the most beautiful natural wonders in the Caribbean.
Travel to the Bay of Samana, where the North Atlanta population of humpback whales migrates to calve or mate from December to early March. Also located at the Bay of Samana is the small island of Cayo Levantado, which is also known as Bicardi Island. Here grow the palm trees featured in the ads for the famous rum.
Tourists can also visit the city of Santo Domingo for a lesson in history and walk the footsteps of the island’s first tourist Christopher Columbus. There are other historical sites, such as the first hospital and church, to visit.
Know anyone that loves golf? Punta Cana has 11 golf courses located all along its strip (there are over 25 courses in the Dominican Republic). It’s a popular all-inclusive vacation area that caters to destination weddings, and honeymoons due to its beautiful white sand beaches. Even families with children can enjoy the island’s miniature entertainment parks.
The Dominican Republic allows you to cater to the likes of so many of your clients. Check out more details here.
As winter storms hit the East Coast this weekend, many airports will shut down. Flights will be canceled causing travel delays all over the United States. When that happens, what would clients rather do? Wait on hold at an airline’s 1-800 number or call their travel agent for assistance? Often travel agents have connections with other travel agencies and businesses that can help travelers get back on their journeys faster than if they had planned trips on their own.
Wouldn’t you like to know that you’re the one that can save a family’s vacation plans? Your online travel training with Career Quest Travel Training Center will help you be prepared for such emergencies. Your grateful clients will be sure to tell others about their experience with your agency and recommend you to their friends and family and help you grow as a home based travel agent.

A term you may hear in the news lately is “millennial travel”. You may be thinking “What is that?” Millennial generally refers to the generation that was born between 1980 and 2000. This is a generation that has been shaped by technology and social media. This is especially important to the travel industry, since nearly 49% of this generation uses technology to search for travel, 87% uses Facebook for travel inspiration, and 50% uses Twitter and Pinterest.
When creating your marketing plan, it is important to keep this generation in mind, as Millennials make up 22% of all travelers and spend more than $200 billion on travel. Millennials value unique travel experiences, so they will not have an interest in packaged travel. Travel agents will be in a demand to provide the expertise needed to plan that unique vacation experience. You can read more about this generation here.

Today we continue discussing marketing. Vicki Freed, senior vice president of sales and trade support and service for Royal Caribbean International has some great advice. “E-mail does not do it. Email is a tool or monologue while a phone conversation is a relationship builder or dialog.” When you are building your marketing plan, you need to keep this in mind. Nothing beats personal communication. Three of five consumers buy from different travel agents than the one who booked their last cruise. Why? Because many times clients don’t remember the name of the travel agent who booked the original trip. What the agent failed to do was to keep the relationship going. Even after a client has taken a vacation, take a few minutes for a follow-up call to ask your client what he/she enjoyed, what he/she didn’t enjoy, and see if your client has an idea or plan for his/her next vacation. You might even get a referral by asking your client if he/she knows anyone planning to book a vacation. Be sure to keep notes about your conversation and be sure to follow-up. Ways to do this include not only phone calls, but sending birthday cards, anniversary cards, or any other correspondence that will help you cultivate a relationship.
Whether you’re a student or plan to enroll, remember that at Career Quest Training Center, we’ll help you create a marketing plan that will launch you as a successful home based travel agent.
