Personalized Service with a Smite

Personalized service is what will set you apart for other agents in your area. But what is personized service ... first and foremost ...start with the basics ... a smile and use your client's name. Over the weekend, I had a chance to witness again how important this basic step can be ... My husband and I hosted an open house for his company at our home. Figuring I need another set of hands to help me, I asked our 17 year old neighbor girl to help me greet and serve the appetizers. Hillary showed up right on time, dressed very nicely and bubbling with enthusiasm. I showed her where everything was and had written down the instructions to warm the appetizers. People started to arrive and I sat back and watched. The minute Hillary opened the door or saw someone in the room she had not met, she immediately introduced herself with a big smile on her face. Then to may amazement, as she was serving the appetizers, she would address each one of them by their first name. How she recalled all their first names having just met them for the first time was impressive but watching the faces of the guests reacting to her re-enforced my belief that personal service can make or break a relationship. These guests probably ate more meatballs and ribs then they would have but no one could tell Hillary "no". Many said they wished she was looking for a job as they would hire her in a minute. At the end of the day, our open house was a success and Hillary went home tired but with double the compensation I had told her she would receive in her pocket - she definitely earned it! Moral of the story - a smile and using a name will not cost you anything but could get you lots of clients.

Ask Why???

I just read an article today by Michael Schrobat, owner of CETC Travel and the Seattle OSSN Chapater Director, entitled "Ask Them Why They Didn't Book". Every agent has been there .... spent hours planning a vacation for a client ... went the extra mile to make sure the clients had specific information on the destinations they were visiting and then when the deposit is due ...they fall off the face of the earth and you can not reach them. So what do you do ? First, don't react (although that is what you want to do). Send the client a letter. Tell them you are concerned that you haven't heard from them and you hope all is well. Remind them that their deposit is past due and they risk losing the type of accommodations and activities they told you they would prefer on their vacation. Ask them if there is something else they wanted that you did not confirm. Many times there is a good reason you haven't heard from them like they have been out of town on personal emergency or away at a soccer tournament. Maybe the car broke down and they used their deposit to pay for the repairs. Give the client a chance to explain the situation before you write them off. Even if they do not book this time, the effort you put into saving the client will make them remember you the next time. Why haven't you enrolled yet? If you are re-visiting our website, you know the interest is there. Career Quest is one of the top online travel schools used by some of the major host agencies for training. If you are serious about starting a travel business, stop procrastinating and sign up today.

Does Marketing Scare You?

Probably the number one worry new agents talk about is Marketing. In most cases, this will be the agents first experience handling their agency's Marketing and it can be scary. Marketing is taught in all our training programs and graduates have told us that our approach was easy to understand and has been effective. First, our definition is simple ... Marketing is making the phone ring ... and how do you do that? By promoting yourself and your agency in your local community. We have lots of ideas we share with our students and encourage them to call us at any time to discuss their ideas. Career Quest has a special tuition offer available today only - July 9 -contact me at nkist@careerquesttraining.com if you would like more details.

With the current Economy...Should I be in Travel?

There is one fact that never changes..."Americans live for their vacation time". Whether one week, two weeks or just a long weekend, the American worker needs a stress breaker and a vacation is the best way. Yes, fares have gone up an yes, there are no fees for checking baggage, BUT if travelers plan ahead, there is still alot of good deals especially if you are booking now for 2009. Yesterday, I was checking rates for a cruise next Easter for friends. I was pleasantly surprised to find I could still book a balcony cabin during easter break for $1000 per person. The main reason you decided to work in travel (or for those of you now looking into a travel career) was because you love travel. The main goal when booking travel for your clients should be finding the "best value" for their money. Not "cheapest" but "best value". The key to your success will be your marketing effort and this does not have to be costly. Get out there - network - pass out business cards - write an article for your local newspaper - you have to promote yourself and your services. I had an e-mail yesterday from a graduate who is hiring people to work for her she is so busy. She is doing something right! Ask yourself this ... have people stopped driving because of the price of gas? NO Have people stopped traveling because of the higher fares or checked baggage fees ...just go to your closest airport on a Saturday morning and you'll get your answer. Don't sit back and wait for business to knock on your door ... get out there a promote your services.

Carry-On Cops

If you or your clients are planning to avoid baggage fees by only taking carry-on luggage on your next trip be advised ... most airlines now have Carry-on Cops. In the past, it has always aggravated me that passengers were allowed to carry-on the amount they did but now the airlines are taking a stand. Most airlines allow one carry-on and one personal carry-on. The first carry-on depending on the airline can be either 45 or 51 linear inches or 22"X 14" X 9". The personal carry-on is a purse, briefcase or laptop. If your carry-on luggage surpasses the number of pieces or size, it will be checked and you will have to pay the baggage fee. The only exception may be the last few passengers boarding a flight whose carry-on luggage meets the regulation but there is no more overhead space. Their luggage my be checked at no fee but it is up to the individual airline.

Fuel Costs, Baggage Fees, Surcharges - Are People Traveling?

According to our graduates, who are home based agents, business could not be better. Their phones are ringing off the hook. Clients are planning ahead for the holidays, winter get-aways and Easter cruises. They know they may be paying a little more but by booking early, they can get the best rates possible. But more important, they want value. Travel agents are needed now more than ever by the traveling public. If you are a home based agent, get the word out in your neighborhood and community that you are ready to work for them arranging their leisure and business travel. For those reading this blog who would like to be a travel agent, now is the time to take that first step - get the education you need to be a good travel agent.

Do Travelers Need To Use a Travel Agent For An Air Ticket?

A few months ago I would probably so no, travelers can just book their own air online. But over the past month, airlines have become an a la carte service. Here is what I mean ... you probably are aware that American is charging for the first and second checked bag - but when does this start? Does Southwest charge for more than two checked bags? Does USAir charge for "peanuts"? What airline now charges extra for a window or exit row seat assignment? Does a child under 2 who will sit on the parent's lap need a boarding pass? Flying has definitely become more difficult and since carriers can have their own regulations and fees, travelers need someone who is on top of all the changes making their reservations. Is that someone you?

34 Million Americans Plan to Cruise in Next Three Years

Is a cruise vacation popular? Sure is and growing every day. According to a survey conducted by CLIA, in the next three years, over 34 million Americans have said that they plan to take a cruise and the cruisers are getting younger. Even in this current economic climate, American cruisers remain bullish due to their high satisfaction with a wonderfully diverse cruise product. Why are cruises so popular - the value and convenience. Like an all-inclusive resort, you have your accommodations, meals and all activities included in the cost, but for cruisers you also have transportation to various destinations. The cruise lines are continually updating and adding features to attract the traveler - NCL now advertises Botox onboard. Do cruisers use a travel agent? Over 75% of the people surveyed say they use a travel agent because there are so many choices. And the percentage of travelers using a travel agent reaches a 100% for premium cruises. Career Quest may be the only travel school that offers students the opportunity to begin their cruise specialist training (ACD) with CLIA while completing our training. If you are planning a career in travel, cruises should be at the top of your list of travel products to sell.

One Tank Trips

There are higher prices at the pump...air fares are soaring ... fuel surcharges are being added by all types of suppliers ... so what is a travel agent to do? GET CREATIVE! Americans cherish their vacations whether its a week or just a long weekend. Take out a map, and figure out what destinations are within 250 miles or four hours of your home. These destinations can be reached on one tank of gas. Contact the hotels or resorts in this area - they too are feeling the crunch of higher fuel prices and may be offering some great rates and packages. Start advertising some "One Tank Vacations" not only to your clients but in general. You will be surprised how many calls you get. Career Quest, although an online travel school that focuses on the skills and techniques new agents need in order to start a home based agency, continues to educate their students long after graduation with Conference Calls or Chat Rooms on topics pertinent to their success. Isn't it time you get started on your travel career?

Should a Host Agency Provide Your Basic Travel Training ?

I get phone calls every day asking me if someone just getting started should take their basic travel training from a travel school like Career Quest or is the basic training offered by some host agencies the same? My advice is always the same ... If you want to become a professional travel agent, you go to a recognized travel school and take one of their program that will prepare you to work in this industry - not training that shows you how to work with a specific host agency. Career Quest is an ASTA Travel School Member with trained, experienced instructors and administrative staff to work with you. We do not just send you a set of books (like most of the host agency programs)- we combine an online study guide that provides access to our Virtual Classroom, Chat Rooms and Instructional Conference Calls. Instructors are available via e-mail or a toll-free number. Upon graduation, we put our students in contact with host agencies we highly recommend that work with new agents. Our preferred host agencies are familiar with our curriculum and the quality of our graduates. We encourage students to compare the host agencies to see which one will suits your needs. Yes, it may sound good to get training from a host agency that you may sign with, but until you are trained, how do you know what you are looking for in a host agency. And what happens if you decide not to sign with them - will other host agencies recognize your training? If you are serious about starting your own travel business, do yourself a favor and start with a good education.

Two Important Questions to Ask About Your Business

When you are the boss, you do have alot to think about and you are continually asking yourself questions. But there are two questions you want to make sure are at the top of the list as they have a big impact on the future of your business. The two questions are: "How much of your business is repeat business?" and "How much of your business comes from referrals?" Why are these two questions so important .... you invest alot of time, money and research into each clients vacation plans. If your clients come back to you ... then you have a loyal client for the future. If your clients are referring you to their family and friends, then you know you are doing a good job for them and have the opportunity to acquire new clients. If you have repeat business and are receiving referrals, pat yourself on the back - your business is on its way to becoming a success.

PRactice What I Preach

Recently I traveled to Pittsburgh to visit my nine month old granddaughter. Grandma decided to have her stay home with her rather than going to the sitters so I had to see if my advice for mothers operating a home based agency works. The first day, Erica was in charge showing Grandma everything she liked to do. I took notes so I had an idea of her schedule. The next day Grandma took over and had planned my call backs for nap time. Responding to e-mails was easy as Erica loves the playpen. By the end of the day, Erica was happy and Grandma not only enjoyed her day with Erica but had accomplished alot of work. I ended my day after she was asleep registering a few students for GDS training and solving an online study guide problem. Did I put in my usual 8 hour day- no but I had not planned on it. I just wanted to be sure I was able to handle any problems and maybe get a few to-do projects done. Working from home (or even on the road) is possible but you have to organize yourself and be flexible.

How Will High Gas Prices Effect the Travel Consumer?

Gas prices at the pump have never been higher and the airlines have added fuel surcharges and now want to charge for checked baggage. How will this effect vacation plans ???? Americans work very hard every day and cherish the vacation time they earn at work. Yes, they the prices may make them a bit more conservative but it will not alter their plans to go. But what they do need is a good travel agent - one that will find them the "best" value for their money. You will notice I did not say "cheapest" I said "Best Value". The all-inclusive resorts or a cruise may be the best value for a family where all activities are located and in one area (saves on a car rental or other transportation) and meals are included (extemely important if your client has teenagers) As a home-based agent, you are linked to a host agency - they are your booking and ticketing center. Because of their size (number of home-based agents) and the volume of their sales (from these home-based agents), you get the best pricing for your clients and earn the highest commission for yourself. A good host agency is a valuable tool for you. (Don't worry, we have about 5 host agencies we highly recommend - so when you are ready, we will put you in touch with them to see which host agency best suits your needs.) Start your travel career today ... the industry needs good agents.

Working From Home - Freedom Meets Self Discipline

Yesterday in our Sunday paper there was an excellent article written by a woman who has a cosmetic home-based business. She tells her new consultants "As good as it sounds, working from home is not for everyone. You have to be very disciplined. Her best advice..."I work smart and I work focused, You don't have to put in a lot of hours, but you do have to use your time properly." I don't think I could have put it better...

Graduate Success Story

Probably the most rewarding part of my job, the success of a graduate. Tarry Overholt dropped me a line the other day and I want to share some of it with you ... "Thanks to Career Quest, I had my own business started and growing in less than a year. CQ gave me the practical skills with real-world lessons that helped me immediately when I started my business. I am affiliated with a host agency and have developed a relationship with many domestic and international suppliers like Fun Jet and Air Jamaica. I work with private home owners to provide luxury accommodations at Disney for families. I am now organizing group travel, partnering with a tanning salon. I never thought that I would get such a quick start in a business that I love so much. I have already reached my first milestone - over $10,000 in commissions in less than a year. Many thanks to Career Quest for giving me the tools and the moral support to begin this incredible journey." Is Tarry an exception to the rule ... NO, we only accept individuals who are serious about becoming a professional travel agent. When we combine our training with their desire, we get another success story.

Fourth Commandment for the Home Based Agent

"Thou Shall Not Re-invent the Wheel" "I want a website for my agency ...I need an accounting program ... I need to create a database for my clients ... I need to pursue e-mail marketing ...I need to go to the library to research a new destination ..." No matter what you feel your agency needs, I guarantee there is a program out there that will work for you. Instead of spending the time creating a program on your own which could take weeks even months, look into programs that exist. Yes, they may cost you to begin with but your time is worth much more and you will be better served if you are spending your time selling not creating an accounting program. Throughout our training, we introduce our students to programs that are in existence for home based travel agents. We even provide our graduates with a Free Marketing Database Program to help them get started.

Don't Confuse a "Kit" or a "Package" with a Travel School

Every week, I get lots of calls from people who are looking for training to become a travel agent. They want to know why our program costs more than the "Kit" or "Package" other organizations are selling. Well, it's simple ... if you just want books, go ahead and order the "Kit" or the "Package" but that is all you are getting...books, very good books as a matter of fact, we too use one of these books BUT you have no instructors or staff to call when you have a question or need an opinion...no chat rooms or conference calls with preferred suppliers to enhance your education ... no free Marketing Database program to help get your business started... no networking with other students and graduates ... Yes their "kits" or "packages" are less expensive, but do you want to teach yourself or have travel professionals teach you.

What Should You Look For in a Host Agency?

Last night, we did a conference call with Karlen Okamura, Sales Director of Nexion, one of preferred host agencies. Karlen did an awesome job outling what you want to look for in a good host and presented the various programs Nexion offers new agents. She also discussed the Pros and Cons of using a GDS system for booking. This conference call was recorded and is available to all our students and graduates. But, if you are serious about becoming a home based travel agent, I would like to give you the opportunity to listen to last night's conference call. E-mail me at nkist@careerquesttraining.com and I will send you the access information.

Third Commandment for the Home Based Agent

Thou Shall Avoid "HBS". What is HBS ... it is a common ailment for people who work at home. Experts call it "Home Based Syndrome" and the symptoms are: Walking around wondering what you were doing before you got distracted. Finding yourself procrastinating for any reason. Working in untidy conditions. Answering the phone or client e-mails at all hours. Luckily, there is a cure. Once your office is established and you have set your hours ... 1. Prioritize your daily schedule. 2. At the end of the work day, take the last 30 minutes to create the To-Do list for the next day. 3. Prioritize jobs according to their importance. 4. Allow yourself time for call backs, research and "clutter" clean up. 5. During scheduled work hours, do not take time out to do household chores or errands. 6. Be diligent at completing the tasks at hand and be sure to cross the tasks off your list as you complete them. 7. When you are done for the day ... close that office door and spend quality time with your family.

Where is Myanmar?

If you have listened to the news this morning, you are probably aware of a devastating cyclone that hit Myanmar and has killed thousands of people. Do you know where Myanmar is? Myanmar is a Southeast Asian country formerly known as Burma. If you take the time to research, probably there are alot of countries that have changed their name since you studied geography in school. As a travel agent, you must be current and that is where Career Quest can help you. Although, we do use travel industry textbooks in our programs, we use the Internet for Geography and Destination research because too many times a textbook is outdated a week after it is printed. We want our grads to know where to turn on the Internet for the most up-to-date information including entry and health documentation for their clients. Ready to get started??? Call or e-mail Career Quest today!

Second Commandment for Home Based Agents

"Thou Shall Set Regular Business Hours" Once your office is established, set your business hours. Let your family, friends and clients know when your office is open. When you set your hours, make sure you work your hours around your family and outside commitments so there are no conflicts. Remember, working from home you do not have to have 9-5 hours. If you know you have to drop off the kids at school at 8:30 and pick them back up at 3:30 then schedule your weekday hours from 10-2. If you are working a full time job and doing your home based agency as a part time job, schedule evening hours two nights from 7:00-10:00a week and Saturday from 10-2. It's your business, your hours can be flexible but once you establish them, stick to them. Make everyone respect your hours.

May is Host Agency Recognition Month

Since choosing a host for your home based travel agency plays such a major role in your success, Career Quest has decided to dedicate an entire Month to the recognition of Host Agencies. Many of our preferred host agencies (Nexion, Travel Planners International, Montrose Travel and Ticket2Travel) will be conducting conference calls with our students throughout the month of May. Not only will they promote their agency but they will each cover a key topic of interest to our pending graduates ... Should I use a GDS system to book? What Marketing is effective for home based agents? Why do I need a host -can't I go it alone? If you are currently enrolled or a graduate, mark every Wednesday night on your May calendar to join our series of Conference Calls. If you are not enrolled yet and plan to be a home based agent, now is the time to enroll so you can participate in our conference calls in May.

Ten Commandments for Home Based Travel Agents

Over the next several weeks, I thought it would be fun to share the "Ten Commandments for Home Based Travel Agents" with you. I bet you didn't know that when Moses came down the Mount he not only had the original Ten Commandments with him, in his back pocket, he had a special set just for Home Based Travel Agents. So here is the first one... Thou Shall Start at Square One The travel industry is like any other business. You need to know the basics in order to work and succeed in this industry. Take the time to get the education you need before you start your home based agency then continue your education every year. Attend a travel show, start to work on your ACC with CLIA or register for a supplier's online program. The travel industry is constantly changing. A good agent is on top of all these changes and aware of the new products being offered by suppliers.

Travel Research Online Now Available for CQ Students

In an effort to continue to enhance our student's education, Career Quest has made special arrangements with Travel Research Online (TRO) for our students to be registered and able to use their website for Career Quest research assignments. Career Quest is an avid believer that you do not use a textbook for geography or destination reseach - before the book is printed it could be outdated. But it is also hard to find good research websites - most consumer sites are too basic. TRO is a Marketing and Research Service only available to Travel Agents providing them with Destination Guides, e-Postcards, Activity Guides, and Tour & Niche Operator Directories. Upon graduation, students can then update their profile with their agency information in order to continue to use TRO. First a free Marketing Database Program and now registration with TRO - this is what sets Career Quest apart from the others!

Shortage of Good Travel Agents

In a recent article of TravelAge West, travel industry experts have announced that there is a shortage of new travel agents - not critical yet but it will be very soon. Not only are retail agencies looking for qualified agents, the major host agencies are also recruiting new agents to become affiliates with them. So what does it take to be a "good" travel agent - great customer service skills. We can teach you the ABC's of travel and how to set up your home based agency but customer service is hard to teach. We can certainly give you suggestions on customer service techniques but sincere customer service comes from the heart and clients can tell if you are sincere. If you are a people-person and like to plan vacations, then you should consider a career in travel.

Networking - Important Marketing Tool?

I saw an interesting article yesterday on the worst myths about networking ... here are just some of them: 1. Networking means meeting as many people as you can. 2. Networking means telling people about your business. 3. Networking is hard work. 4. Networking is a waste of time. and the one I like the most ... Networking is expensive. Some comments on these myths. Yes, as a home based agent you do want to meet people but you are looking for quality not quantity and you want to talk to people who enjoy traveling. Yes, in general conversations you will tell people what you do but it is your approach and love of the industry that people will remember not the details of your professional life. Hard work - shouldn't be, networking should be a natural process or it will come across as phony. If you think cultivating new relationships that could turn into new clients is a waste of time, then yes it surely would be a waste of time. Face-to-face networking or e-mail networking doesn't cost you anything but your time and it's the most inexpensive for of marketing. If you are not networking ... you are missing a great opportunity.

Typical Career Quest Student

There is no "typical" student at Career Quest. Our students range from 21 to 72. Our youngest student is a college student who plans to offer travel services to her fellow classmates and our oldest student is a resident at a Senior Housing Facility who plans to run group tours for the residents. Other profiles include mothers who want to stay at home with their children, empty nesters who now have the time and money to invest in themselves and entrepreneurs of all ages that are looking for a new business opportunities. A large majority of our students are pursuing a second career that can become their main career when they retire - and this category includes alot of married couples (we do offer a buddy program for married couples). It's amazing how many teachers, nurses and real estate agents have enrolled in our programs, and one of our favorites is a 60 year old Dentist who keeps us all on our toes and always asks if we are flossing. The diversity of our student body certainly makes our monthly chat rooms very interesting as each student brings a different perspective to the discussion. Our students become Email buddies and enjoy the opportunity to network with each other. Are you looking for a travel school that cares about you - don't look any farther - you've found it!

Be Ready to Promote Yourself Wherever You Go!

Over the weekend, my husband and I went to Loew's to purchase new french doors. We had already done our homework and knew what we wanted so in the store we went to purchase the doors. We found the display and I commnented that they had increased by $100. A gentlemen walking by said "you'll like those doors, I've installed alot of them. Have you seen the plain door model?" We followed him over to another display, and yes that is the one we had seen before that was $100 less. We had not noticed but the display we first went to had grids on the door rather than being just glass. The man asked if we had someone to install it - Loews does offer installation for $500 but he could do it for less - he handed us his card and wrote his website on the back. End of story ... we bought the door and called this man to install. Travel clients will not be as obvious as we were in Loews, but how many times have you stood in line at a post office or sat in a restaurant and heard someone talking about a trip they had taken or wanted to take. A great "break-in" line is "You'll love Cancun I've been there or you'll love Royal Caribbean I book all my clients on them." Then give them some small travel tip (maybe a reminder about Airline Security or a favorite restaurant in Cancun) and hand them your business card and tell them to call you anytime. If you send out monthly newsletters or Email travel alerts, invite these people to visit your website to register for this service. No one is going to promote you better than yourself! Be prepared to do a three minute commercial on the spot.

Should Home Based Agents Charge a Service Fee ??

This is a question that faces new home based agents every day. Should they charge a service fee? Many feel because they are new and need to grow their business, they should not charge a fee. But, there are alot of shoppers out there and you do not want to waste your time with a shopper who has not intention of buying from you. Here are my thoughts and what I tell our students: Over the past two days I had to get a tire and TV repaired and the lawn sprinkler service had to come to turn on the system. For the tire, there was a minimum $24 service fee - if I did not get my tire repaired there they had collected $24 for their time. The TV repair service had a $105 fee to come to the house and evaluate what was wrong with my TV. The lawn sprinkler service has a $90 fee just to come to the house. I did have the garage fix my tire so my total bill was $24 + $10 to plug a slow leak. The TV repair service gave me an estimate of $800 to fix the TV - if I do have them come back to do the work, they will apply the $105 to my bill but if not it cost me $105. The lawn sprinkler service came turned on three faucets, walked around to make sure each head was popping up and we needed one new head. The bill was $105 + $15 for the head and $20 additional labor (by the way the man was here no more than 15 minutes). So, someone calls you and wants to go an all-inclusive resort in Cancun in July - it takes you maybe 30 minutes to check out prices and availability - for two people the total cost would be $2200.00 (you would earn a minimum of $200 commission) BUT, this couple says they will think about it and call you back ... AND GUESS WHAT ...they never do. Let's replay that call ... you tell them before you can start researching their vacation you need a little information (their name, address, phone number, e-mail address) and it is your policy to charge a $25.00 service fee upfront which is applied to their account when they book the vacation. To cover this, you do accept credit cards. If you have a serious buyer - there is no problem. If you have a shopper, they will tell you they are not interested. Did you lose a client? Yes, but not a paying one.

Stuck in Cancun

You are vacationing in Cancun and hear that your airline ATA has filed bankruptcy and closed down. Your return flight is scheduled in three days on ATA. So what do you do???? If you book the trip yourself, start making phone calls or get on the Internet. If you used a travel agent, give him or her a call, if your agent hasn't already tried to reach you. When agents hear of a situation like this, they spring to action pulling all their records to see which of their clients they have to re-book. The next time someone tells you they don't need a travel agent ...tell them some of the consequences they could face.

$10,000 Lesson in Why to Use a Travel Agent

There was an article in the Los Angeles Times recounting the nightmare one couple endured during a recent vacation they booked to Italy. They were able to find a bargain fare on Alitalia from JFK to Rome but had to take American from LAX to JFK. Of course, there were delays and even though they had allowed 3 hours between flights they missed their Alitalia flight. By the time they reached JFK, the Alitalia counters were closed and the only flight they could book was 2 seats on American to London at a cost of $2000 each because American and Alitalia are not in the same alliance. Eventually, this couple did link up with their tour in Italy but this vacation cost them alot more than they had planned. If you book your own vacations, ask yourself the following questions: What is an Airline Alliance and which airlines are in which one? What is the standard connecting time for international flights? What type of travel insurance should you buy traveling internationally? Most traverlers can not answer any of these questions but a trained travel agent can and even more important, one phone call to a travel agent could have saved alot of time and money. By the time this couple arrived at JFK - a travel agent could have had them confirmed to their destination.

Clients for Life

A client is probably your most valuable asset for your business. Finding a good client is hard enough but keeping them takes strategy on your part. You can't take your clients for granted - you need to establish a relationship with them. Each client is different so from the start you need to understand their behavior in order to cement your relationship. In most circumstances, the client has come to you. There is something, a referral, an advertisement, maybe your website that caught their eye and made them want to contact you. From the start, listen to the client. Find out how they heard about you and what is it about your agency or you that interested them. Become a sponge when talking with a new client, learn all there is to know about them and what they want. Let them know you are the right agent for them and you will see to all their needs. Attention Current Students and Graduates - we will discuss this topic during our next istructional chat room April 9 from 9-10 PM EDT.

Is Neighborhood Canvassing Effective for Home-Based Agents?

You definitely want your neighbors to know what you do but you must make sure that your canvassing approach is professional. Today, I walked out to put a letter in the mail box. In the middle of my driveway I found a little zip lock baggie with a stone in it (so it didn't blow away) and a business card from a Landscaping business. The business card is very professional but their method is not. Yes, it is easier to drive around and fling the baggie onto the driveway, but it certainly did not impress me. Now, some type of plastic envelope or bag attached to my front door knob with a flyer or business card inside would impress me. First, the owner took the time or paid someone to walk from house to house distributing his materials. Second, information (especially those that look professional) will be reviewed and if the service is needed, the marketing effort was a success. If you plan to try this marketing approach, I would suggest offering some type of discount for first time callers.

Growing Market - Second Honeymooners

More time...more money...looking for the "ultimate" vacation to relax and unwind ...Second Honeymooners is a niche market agents need to focus on. Unlike the first honeymoon that was just part of the whole wedding, a second honeymoon is the main focus. Where do they want to go? What activities are they looking for? A recent survey conducted by ASTA revealed the following hot spots for Second Honeymooners: 1. Hawaii 2. A Cruise 3. Jamaica 4. Canun 5. Europe Marketing tip - if you have a website, design some type of icon for a Second Honeymoon and have it attached to a page featuring some great packages in different destinations. Remember - luxury and adventure when selecting your products.

Onboard Experience

I just returned from Cruise3Sixty in Ft. Lauderdale and wanted to share an airline onboard experience with you. As usual, inclement weather in Chicago had our flight delayed and then once boarded the pilot announced the faucets in the lavatories were not working so we had to wait for a maintenance man. We ended up being an hour late departing. During the flight, I overheard the couple behind us talking about the cruise they were departing on that afternoon and their concern that they would miss the ship because of the delays. If the flight landed on time which was 1:30 pm - they had two hours to get to the port and embark on their cruise. We were now arriving at 2:30 which gave them only an hour to reach the port. The pilot then announced that due to the lightning around the airport in Ft Lauderdale, the ramp agents were not being allowed to unload luggage - so there was going to be a delay in baggage. By now, this couple was very upset at the airline. I could not resist asking if they had used a travel agent to book their cruise and they promptly said no we do all our own travel bookings online. They asked me why I asked and I explained if they had used a travel agent, he or she would have made sure they had taken an earlier flight allowing at least 4 hours to reach the port and in some cases due to winter weather, the agent would have flown them in the night before. The wife immediately told her husband he always thinks he knows what is best and now they were going to miss their ship. I did ask if they had travel insurance which thankfully they did take out. I told them to call the 800 number on their cruise ticket the minute they landed to advise the cruise line of their dilemma. Due to the weather, it was very possible the ship's departure time had been changed because more customers were also delayed in arriving. They thanked me for my help and the husband asked "are you a travel agent?" I said I used to be, now I train individuals to be good travel agents.

Travel Agents Are Harder to Find

Travel agents are not extinct. They may have changed their location and now they may specialized in a particular niche market, but travel agents are still the best way to plan a vacation. Our survey shows 9 out of 10 times, a travel agent can beat an online fares and travelers are finding the "cheap deals" are not worth considering. Home-based agents have the luxury of setting their own hours and providing a level of customer service that they would expect. Repeat customers and referrals lay the foundation for a successful business.

If I am a New Travel Agent, Can I go to a Travel Trade Show?

Once you have a basic knowledge of the travel industry and have started your home-based agency, it is a good idea to go to one of the travel or cruise trade shows. These show are normally a three or four day event over a weekend and give attendees the opportunity to attend seminars and presentations by today's leading suppliers. You also have the opportunity to do ship inspections and attend a Marketplace Trade Show. But even more important, you get to network with lots of agents and sometimes that can be the best education you can receive. I also recommend that existing agents who have not attended a show in a couple years should definitely go - it's a great way to revitalize yourself and get you back on track. These shows are normally held in port cities like Ft. Lauderdale, Miami, New Orleans, Los Angeles, San Diego, Seattle and Vancouver. Word of advise - if you see a show advertised - register early and confirm your ship inspections and workshops - they fill up so fast.

Toot Your Own Horn

Many times the arrangements you have confirmed for clients took extra effort on your part but you may feel it is all part of the job. Yes, it is your job to confirm the vacation your client has requested, but if you take it upon yourself to get them upgraded or include an additional feature at no extra cost to the client, you should definitely let you client know you did this for them. Make them feel special and at the same time make them appreciate you even more.

Do You Know the Best Packing Tip???

Dry Cleaner bags... for years I have used dry cleaner bags when I pack and my clothes arrive at my destination in good shape. You want to pack in layers with your heavy items like shoes at the bottom. But the key to wrinkle-free clothes is to put a couple dry cleaner bags in between your layers. Because they are slippery, clothes slide around and do not bunch up which is why you get wrinkles. Try it the next time you travel and see the amazing results. Pass this tip onto your clients too.

Should your Home-Based Agency Have A Website?

When asked that question, I always say yes and advise our graduates that their website will never compete with the big guys like Expedia and Travelocity but it does give them an online marketing presence. Today, I was reading an article in Travel Trade by Rob Torres , Google's Travel Industy Director, and he had some great insight into this question. "If agents can somehow build some sort of online presence, even if it doesn't have booking capability, but is driving customers to their storefronts, they're going to have a better advantage and better chance of acquiring customers...although not everyone is purchasing online, they're all reviewing online. You have to be there to play. You don't have to have the most exciting bells and whistles; if you're not being found at all, you're not even in the game."

Why They Chose Career Quest

We are always asking our students - What do you like? What is working for you? What isn't helping you? But this month, we ask our recent enrollments why they chose Career Quest and here were some of the responses: "I liked that Career Quest was not a host agency school. I was going to get an education accepted by all host agencies and could select a host when I knew what I was looking for." "The price was right - much less than other programs." "Ability to choose which program I wanted to take." "Whenever I called, everyone was so helpful and made me feel at ease." "When I called, I was asked for my name at the end - I wasn't drilled at the beginning like all the other schools." "I was two clicks away from signing with another school and found Career Quest offered all four GDS systems." "My two friends graduated from Career Quest and their businesses are doing great, figured that is where I should start too."

Do you know?

If a client called you up and said she wanted to go to Machu Picchu or the Great Wall or Chichen Itza, do you know what countries you would be sending her to? These are just a few of the top destinations travelers say they would like to visit in 2008. There is no way you will know about every destination in the world, but your job as a travel agent is to know where to look to find the information. That is what Career Quest teaches you. We provide a training program covering the basics you need to know and then make sure you know where to look to find up-to-date, pertinent facts for your client. Are you meant to be a travel agent? If you love to talk about travel and you love to do research ... you could be a natural.

No On e Uses Travel Agents Anymore - True or False

False ... travel agents still sell 51% of all airline tickets, 81% of all tours and packages, 45% of all car rentals and about 47% of all hotels. Every travel agents is different and can specialize in a variety of niche markets plus they have access to exclusive pricing and package deals that are most times not available to the public on the Internet. Travel agents also have leverage with the various suppliers because of the volume of sales that they do with them. And the best part, home-based agents offer a level of customer service that makes planning vacations a pleasure.

I Lost My "Cool"!!!

If you ask anyone who knows me, I am a very calm, peace-keeping type person but last week I got an inquiry phone call and lost my cool. The woman wanted to know after she paid our fee (tuition) would she then start sending all her travel reservations to our website and then how fast would she get her check? I quickly explained that we are educators and after you complete our program, we put you in contact with the host agencies we highly recommend and after you select one of them, they get you set up and you can start booking. She immediately told me, "No I don't have time to do all that, there used to be a company that you just paid a fee, sent them travel requests and you got money and lot of free travel." I immediately responded "Yes those type of agencies are out there and they are scams. I went on to explain if you want to be a Travel Professional and start a legitimate travel business you have to take the time to do it right. Well her friend went with this other type of agency and that's what she wants. That did it -this poor woman now heard my rath ... I asked her if she thought it was fair for people to simply pay money to get the same commissions and perks as someone who had trained and worked at creating a successful business. I told her I would feel very sorry for her customers - she just saw them as dollar signs not clients. I have worked in the travel industry for over 30 years. Like the insurance or real estate industy, true travel professionals constantly update their training and work hard to develop a successful business. I do apologize to this woman for going off on her but I do not want people like her in our industry.

Expedia's Top Selling Most Popular Ships

There was a nice article on MSN.com yesterday showing Expedia's Top Selling Most Popular Ships. The first five ships they listed were: RCCL's Majesty of the Seas, NCL's Pride of America, Celebrity's Century, NCL's Norwegian Pearl and Carnival's Liberty. They are different size ships, some newer than others and the do cruisie to different ports. If you are not familiar with these ships then I would suggest taking some time to research them.

Have you set Goals for youself?

Setting goals is an important process as you are thinking about your ideal future, and motivating yourself to turn this vision of the future into the reality. Setting goals helps you choose where you want to go in life and what changes you need to make. By knowing what you want to achieve, you know where to concentrate your efforts. Probably even more important, if your goals are realistic and achieveable, as you reach your goals you will also build your self-esteem. It is also important that you set goals of different levels. First create your "big picture" of what you want to do in life. Second, create smaller goals that help you reach your first goal. For example, if you want to have your own home-based travel agency - that would be your "big picture" goal. Your secondary goals would be: get training, develop a business plan, set up your business, select a host agency, implement a marketing plan, attend a travel show. Which goal are you at right now? If you haven't even set goals for yourself - shame on you. If you are serious about your own travel business - get started today!

Does the Stock Market Affect Travel?

As we watch the stock market take a roller coaster ride this week, you may ask how this affects travel. Yes, Americans may be thinking it's time to start saving for a rainy day but vacations are a necessity in our busy life. Pressure at work, mulit-tasking at home, family commitments - all cause us stress. If there is one date you always remember its that "week of vacation" you have scheduled. No matter how tight the budget becomes, Americans will always find money to get away. Home-based agents need to focus on the value of a vacaton and advertise that fact. Let your clients know you respect their concern over the cost of a vacation and that you will find them the best package or cruise for their "buck". And if you are thinking it's time to start saving ... think about a part-time job working at home as a home-based agent - you set the hours and can work from home. Now is the time to get started.

Career Quest is designed for the new agent - someone wanting to enter the travel industry that has no training. Our monthly chat rooms introduce new agents to some of today's preferred suppliers or topics that pertain to a travel agency business. As announced, graduates now will receive a free Marketing Database program to help them get their business started. New Cruise Boarding Rules

Starting February 18,2008, all passengers must board at US ports at least one hour prior to the ship's departure. Passengers are encouraged to use the cruise line's online check-in systems to submit their information as soon as possible before arriving at the embarkation port. Most cruise lines recommend checking in at least 3 days prior to departure. It is always a good idea to send your clients to the port city the night before to avoid any flight delays on the day of sailing. Most cruise lines offer pre-cruise packages at local hotels. Like the airlines, if the passenger fails to make it to the ship by the hour-before-departure deadline, they may be denied boarding without any refund of their cruise payment even if they are late due to a delayed flight. Make sure your clients buy travel insurance.

CLIA Agent Survey

CLIA recently surveyed nearly 1000 travel agents on cruise booking trends and here are some of the results: 1. The fastest growing cruise vacation groups are families or multigenerational cruisers and baby boomers. 2. The Caribbean remains the number one cruise market. 3. The traditional 6-8 day cruise remains the top in terms of numbers of cruisers but agents noted other types of cruises are also in demand. 4. The top three reasons for taking a cruise are: 1. Value 2. Opportunity to see multiple destinations in one trip 3. Convenience 5. The most popular features of that onboard experience are the increasing diversity and flexibility of dining options and new shipboard activites like bowling, ice skating, rock climbing and aqua parks.

A Guardian Angel Sent Her To Career Quest

It is our policy to ask our new enrollments how they heard about Career Quest and usually its one of two sources - a Host Referral or the Internet. But today when I asked, I was told a source I had not heard before. It seems she wanted to start a home based business and did not know if she should sell cosmetics or be a travel agent. Then she got one of those "Guardian Angel" e-mails (which she normally ignored) that said her life was going to change the next day. Well, the next day she contacted a friend who was a travel agent and he encouraged her to pursue a career as a travel agent and referred her to Career Quest. She immediately called our office, we discussed her ideas and which program would be best for her and she is enrolled and on her way to a new career. That was a first for us, and we are very thankful to this Guardian Angel for bringing her to us.

What is a Home Based Travel Agent's Most Important Tool?

By far, it is a database program. A lead is a potential client. If someone has given you their contact information especially their e-mail address, you want to nurture this lead into a client and then once they are your client, you want to value them in order to keep them as your client. A good database program will allow you to develop e-mail campaigns so you are continually in contact with your clients even if its just a quick hello.

Big Announcement

We know our training program works - graduates tell us it does but they also tell us that the biggest problem they have to overcome is "getting their business started". So what could we at Career Quest do to help them, well here it is ... Career Quest has joined forces with ClientEase and will be providing all our graduates with a free Marketing Database System called MarketEaseOnline. I viewed the program yesterday which claimes to be the most powerful email marketing tool and you know what - IT IS! The program allows you to easily create your client database that only you have access to and control. You can design your own marketing promotions (and it's easy to do) and send unlimited e-mails. There is import and export features and tracking programs to see the results of your marketing campaigns. You can put a registration page on your website that updates your database records. Think about it - you can market anytime from anywhere. Now when a student completes any of our training programs, Career Quest will register them for MarketEaseOnline - our gift to them to give them the boost they need to get their business started. Which program are you interested in? If you haven't reviewed the Course Outline for that program recently - go to our website and check it out. See all the advanced programs that have been added and now we have included a Freee Marketing Database System.

One-Day Strategic Planning Session

Creating a successful strategic plan is not difficult. First of all, a strategic plan is not a business plan or marketing plan. Those plans will be incorporated into a strategic plan, but a well-developed strategic plan is to develop a competitive advantage. What is a competitive advantage ...it is simply the answer to: What can my company do better than any other company? A strategic plan will include stating your purpose, visualizing the future, taking inventory of your company and profiling your clients. The key to success for any plan is to write it down. Any business without a plan can be compared to a car withour a steering wheel. Attention CQ students - we will be discussing a One Day Strategic Plan at our next chat room on Tuesday, January 15 from 9-10 PM EDT.

It's 2008 - Get Yourself Organized Now

Even though it's cold outside and snow is piling up, it's the start of a new year. This first week of the new year, I make myself get organized. Pull all the 2007 receipts and statements both personal and business. Get my Outlook Organizer set up for 2008. Replace the Marketing Wall Calendar and Desktop Calendar. All those trade magazines and travel publications are gone through and what I don't need gets "pitched". With all the clutter gone, I get out the cleaning supplies and make my office sparkle. Yes, it takes time but what a great feeling when it is done. Whether you are a prospective student, currently enrolled student or a working agent, you need to get yourself ready to "attack" your goals for 2008. We just got a supply of "Organizing for Dummies" by Eileen Roth and it has a great ideas so we are including this Pocket Guide in the instructional materials for all our new enrollments in January. Also, watch for our exciting news which should be announced at the end of next week.

If weather cancels a flight, is the airline responsible for our hotel for the night?

Unfortunately, any "act of nature" including snow and ice storms are not the responsibility of the airline you are flying. If they delay or cancel your flight, it is for safety reasons. Normally, when a delay or cancellation is the fault of the airline, for instance no crew or aircraft, then (in most cases) the airline is responsible and will issue you vouchers. Always tell your client to check with their airline.

Networking with CQ Grads

As anyone in this industry will tell you, networking is the key to success. Not only networking with prospective clients, but networking with your fellow agents. When students complete our programs, we encourage them to remain in contact with us. As new agents in the travel industry, they encounter everyday problems that more experienced agents have forgotten about. By networking with our grads, we hear little tips and facts that we pass along to our students and other graduates. Most of these tips are posted on the CQ Virtual Classroom, but I will share them from time to time with everyone. I was talking with a student today who is on her way to getting her business up and running. She attended the recent Luxury Show in Las Vegas and was amazed at the number of new agents that have no clue as to how to start marketing their services. After listening for awhile to a couple new agents outlining their sales strategy which did not seem to be working for them, she turned to them and told them "stop trying to sell and just listen to your client". She was so right, most clients do not want a hard sell nor do they want to be part of the famous "Steps in Selling". They want an agent who asks the right questions and "Listens" to their answers.

Do you buy yourself a Holiday Gift?

During the holidays, all we seem to do is buy presents - the paper boy, the mailman, the babysitter - the list goes on and on. But do you treat yourself to a holiday gift? I do! Every year I try to find either a book or dvd that will inspire me to make changes in the upcoming year. Books seem to be my favorite since I spend so much time waiting in airports. One year I bought myself "Who Moved My Cheese". The next year I bought "off-the-Wall Marketing Ideas" and this year, I have bought myself a copy of "Two Weeks to a Breakthrough - How to Zoom Toward Your Goal in 14 Days". I have several goals for 2008, both personal and professional and since this book was recommended to me I thought it would be this year's gift to myself. No matter where you are in your career, you never want to stop learning. In the travel industry, there is always a new supplier or product that you need to familiarize yourself with or possibly a new marketing idea that will help increase your business. Do yourself and your business a favor, set some goals for 2008 and start now taking the steps to reach them.

Continued Growth for Home Based Agents

In the recent edition of Travel Trade, there was an interview with OSSN President Gary Fee. Gary made some very good points which I wanted to share with everyone ... "Home Based agents are delivering results that travel industry suppliers need and products consumers are willing to buy in part because these agents are closest to the customer." "Accessible, affordable, learnable technology has changed the business by lowering communication and booking costs" "A key challenge for the industry will be to recruit and train new travel agents who can help grow the retail business." Career Quest is one of the OSSN's online educators offering a variety of new agent training programs. We also work very closely with several of the major host agencies making sure our training includes what you need to affiliate with them.

Holiday Chat Room Ideas

Instead of our usual instructional chat room, Tuesday Night our chat room was a Holiday Gift Exchange and the gift(s) were ideas are students and graduates had to exchange with each other. My favorite suggestion from a graduate was a reminder to all that no matter where you are going or when, look professional, especially if you are attending a travel show or conference. I had many graduates comment on the "unprofessional" appearance of some home based agents attending the recent Luxury Show in Las Vegas. I find it kind of ironic that an agent would be attending a "Luxury Show" hoping to gain knowledge on this growing market to sell to their "luxury" clients but they do not look the part. I agree that there were no clients at this show, but it is also important that suppliers and fellow agents see you are serious about your career. My favorite suggestion from a current student was from a young mother who finds time to study while her children have their "quiet" time either reading or watching an educational DVD. She says they call it "study time" and at the end of the hour, she quizzes them on what they watched and the children ask her what she read. I thought this was a great way to introduce young children to good study habits. We conduct instructional chat rooms or conference calls at least once a month, ususally mid-week during evening hours and address alot of topics plus have great guest speakers.

Finally ... the #1 Reason to Use a Travel Agent

Convenient One-Stop Shopping - a travel agent handles everything - the flight, hotel, transfer, car rental, the cruise or tour package, activites, document and currency updates and probably most important, they are the one to call while on vacation if you have a problem. Think of a Travel Agent as a Travel Conceirge - some agents even set-up the transportation to and from the airport and house and pet sitting - what sets you apart from all other agents is your customer service - the more you book, the more you earn but the more you do for the client, the more they love you and come back time and time again.

Plan to be a Travel Agent - Promote Yourself Now

If you have started classes or are planning to start in the next couple of weeks - give your agency a head start. Find some nice "Happy New Year" cards and send them out to all your friends and family announcing your plans to be a home-based agent. If you already have your business telephone number - give that out, if not, give them your e-mail address even if it is your personal one and tell them to contact you for their next vacation. This does two things - #1, if the word is out, you have to get yourself motivated and finish (or in some cases, start) your training and get your agency up and running. #2, it let's everyone know what your plans are and when do most people start thinking about vacations - in January when you have to notify your employer when you want to take time off. Then we you are open for business - send out a broadcast, have people over for an open house, distribute flyers to announce your opening. Make sure you keep a record (in a database system) of everyone you send an e-mail or flyer to - For those of you planning to start your training this month, please be aware our offices are closed from Dec 20 through Jan 4 - no shipment of new materials will go out during that time, so enroll today. For those of you who are agents, our next workshop will be Feb 1-3 in Ft Lauderdale - there is a Holiday Special Price being offered this month - take advantage of it and save.

Outlook for Leisure Travel in 2008 Looks Sunny

This past week, agents and suppliers met in Ft. Lauderdale for a Travel Conference and everyone was in agreement that the outlook for Leisure Travel in 2008 is bright and sunny. The American consumer is under pressure with work deadlines, family commitments and the rising cost of groceries and gasoline. But, they always pencil a vacation into their planner. One or two weeks each year that they can get away and leave their pressures at home. As agents, we are not selling a ship or a resort, we are selling a fantasy, elegant dining, pampering services, and for families, planned day care and children's programs. Is this a good time to be working in the travel industry? For agents, trained and affiliated with a good host agency, it's a great time.

Tailoring your vacation with their knowledge will help you save time and money. # 26 & #27 What to Eat and What not to Eat - travel agents have access to restaurant directories to help you find the type of food you would like at the best restaurants. They also are familiar with any local delicacies which you may want to avoid or locations to stay away from.

Traveling this Holiday Season - call your bank and credit card companies

With all the news regarding credit card and debit card fraud, banks and credit card companies are really clamping down this holiday season. If they see purchases from a state other than the state listed as the card's home address, they could put a hold on your card. If you are traveling outside your home state, call your bank and credit card companies to advise them. They will make a note on your account which could avoid any problems while you are traveling.

Continuing with the 101 Reasons

Figured out Number 1 yet? Well, here are a few more you can eliminate... # 5 Choice - Travel agents can offer you an array of options and price ranges from a variety of suppliers. This means the traveler has the final say in their vacation plans. # 29 Local laws & customs - many countries have laws and customs that are very different from ours and a traveler could find themself in alot of trouble if they were not made aware of these laws and customs prior to their trip. #73 You get to be the Boss - your travel agent works for you. It is their job to tailor the traveler's trip to their needs.

101 Reasons to Use a Travel Agent

Did you know there were 101 good reasons why travelers should use a travel agent when booking their vacations? Can you guess what the Number 1 reason is? Well, I am not going to tell you yet...over the next couple weeks I will be sharing these reasons with you and most of them are great ideas for marketing your agency. So here are some of them... # 4 Saves Time - even savy travelers who book on the internet do not have the time to compare all the various sites or sit on hold waiting to talk to a reservationist. Travel agents have access to live inventories that show them what is available and at what price. # 17 Where to go with the Kids - travel agents who specialize in Family Travel has spent time learning and experiencing the various destinations, hotels and attractions. They know just where to send you and when to get the most for your money. PS # 21 is Where to go to avoid Kids ... sometimes adults want to get away not only from their own children but from everyone elses. A good travel agent knows where to send you for a quiet, relaxing adult vacation.

Pack Your Patience!

As we approach one of the busiest travel times of the year, airline experts are telling us to be prepared for delays. And of course, here in the Midwest, we are experiencing fog and rain which is suppose to change over to snow so all the airports are experiencing delays. Here are some tips if you are traveling by air for Thanksgiving: 1. Allow plenty of time to check your bags and get through security. Most of the major airports are suggesting 2 hours prior to departure. 2. Remember liquids and gels you carry on must be no larger than 3oz must be in a quart size zip-lock bag. 3. Most carriers allow you one carry-on size piece of luggage and one personal bag (like a purse or briefcase). Looking ahead to Christmas - if you haven't make your reservations, try to avoid the peak times and days. On behalf of the administration and staff of Career Quest, we wish everyone a very Happy Thanksgiving.

Fuel Surcharges for Cruises

Over the past week, several of the major cruise lines have announced that they will begin to charge a fuel surcharge of anywhere from $5-$7 per person per day. Now you will have to check with each cruise line to see if this charge applies for clients who have already paid in full. Some cruise lines are only applying it to new reservations or reservations that are not paid in full at this time. Other cruise lines are applying it to all reservations.

Southwest Has A Winner

Everyone loves Southwest's cheaper fares and good on-time performance but everyone hated the "cattle-call" type of boarding procedure they used. People would camp-out in the A,B or C line to ensure they got a good seat. Standing in line is one thing, but some travelers sprawled their office out in front of them or laid down and took a nap. It was a real circus. Well, starting Nov 1, Southwest started a new system and we just traveled on Southwest and I think it went very smoothly. Now when you get your boarding pass, you not only have a letter but a number. So if you have A 32 - you are in the A line and have the 32nd position. They ask everyone to remain seated until their letter and number are called. There are no more sprawled out, sleeping travelers in line and the boarding process went very smoothly. Congrats Southwest- it seems to be a winner.

Is it time to re-invent yourself?

As I was sipping on my coffee this morning, the Today Show had an excellent segment on Re-inventing Yourself with a Second Career and that second career should be something you love to do. Of course, they explained that people who have had a successful first career fear that they could fail the second time around but they had some great advise that I think applies to all those who are considering becoming a home based travel agent. Do your homework and take all the necessary steps to prepare you for this career... set yourself up financially for the first couple of months ... and make sure your family is onboard with your decision. Then ...go for it! There is an old saying and I do not remember who said it but it says it all ... LEAP AND THE NET WILL APPEAR! Are you ready to take that leap ...we'll catch you and help you make a travel career a reality.

First-time Cruises Have Lots of Questions

When it comes time to sell a cruise especially to a first time cruiser, you will spend most of your time answering questions. Do I have go to every meal and eat with strangers? What should I pack? Dress clothes, casual clothes ? What does the cruise price include? Is liquor and pop included in the price? Who and how much should I tip? A good travel agent will cover all the bases and make sure their clients know exactly what to do and what to expect from any vacation.

Who Owns the Cruise Lines?

The cruise lines run ads every Sunday in the newspaper all competing for your vacation dollars. But did you know that many of the competitors are actually sister companies? Here is Who Owns What ... Carnival Corporation owns: Carnival, Costa, Seabourn, Holland America, Princess and Cunard. Royal Caribbean Cruises ownw: Royal Caribbean and Celebrity. Star Cruises Group owns: Star Cruises, 50% NCL and Orient Lines. Apollo Management owns: Oceania Cruises, 50% NCL Although they may be owned by the same company, the cruise lines have done a good job of diffentiating their brands and their cruise experiences.

"My Host Agency Will Train Me"

If I had a dollar for every time I heard that statement, I could be on a two-week cruise rather than writing this blog. Good, legitimate host agencies leave the educating of their agents to the experts. They do not try to do their own basic training, or say they provide training when they simply give you a pile of books. A true travel school has a staff of instructors ready to answer your questions and grade your exams. They provide chat rooms or conference calls to enhance your education. They encourage students to attend travel shows and conferences and provide the avenues for student registration. And probably the most important fact is that even after you graduate, you can always call and get help. That is what Career Quest does for their students and after successfully completing the program, we introduce our graduates to good host agencies who then take over the new agent's training by introducing their policies, procedures and booking system. If you have signed on with a host agency and feel your basic training has been inadequate, contact us today. Taking a few weeks now to complete our program may be the best decision you make for your business.

The Power of Goals

A good friend of Career Quest, Keith Powell, just published a new book called "The Transforming Power of Achievement". Keith is an outstanding speaker and referred to as the "Business Revivalist". This book will soon be available at the Career Quest Book store but today, I wanted to share a few thoughts from Keith's book ... "The Power of Goals define what success means to you. Goals are part of the bigger process with each stage playing an important part of the end result. Writing your goals down brings clarity. Your goals should also include a balanced life and always have a Golden Goal of Service." If your goal is to start a new career in travel, no matter how much you have traveled or how many cruises you have been on, to be a success in this industry, you have to start at Square One - training. Career Quest offers several new agent programs that will provide you with the basics you need to know to work in this industry plus guidelines to set up your home based office correctly. When the time is right, we will put you in touch with host agencies we highly recommend and these agencies are familiar with the Career Quest Curriculum and quality of our graduates so they are very willing to work with you. Are you ready to get started - call or contact Career Quest today to get started.

Boarding 101

Our hats are off this morning to Southwest Airlines. They listen to their customers and try to improve their procedures. Everyone would agree, Southwest offers some of the best fares and their service is exceptional (except for passengers who wear mini skirts). If there is one complaint it has alway been the "cattle call" procedure to board a flight. It is bad enough you have to allow an additional 90 minutes to clear security at airports but if you want a "good" seat on a Southwest flight you had to check in online - hope you go "A" Boarding and then get to the gate at least an hour before and camp-out in the "A" line. It really has become disgusting the way some passengers "camp-out" while in line and the best is when a passenger simply puts their "carry on bag" in line and they go take a seat. Starting in November, Southwest will be assigned a letter and a number on their Southwest Boarding Pass. The number is not your seat number -it is your boarding number. So if you get "A 13" you are in group A and the 13 passenger to board. This way passengers do not have to camp-out, they can simply sit in the waiting area and when the passenger's boarding group is called they simply find their designated place in line. Will it work? Time will tell but at least Southwest is trying to improve their system.

Virtual Classroom Adds Instructional Articles

Just a note to all enrolled students (and if you are planning to enroll in Career Quest make sure you also take note) beginning in October, the instructors will begin to post instructional articles and information on the Virtual Classroom. This is the easiest way for us to get changes and new information regarding suppliers. Also, next week the new edition of CQ Messenger will be loaded on our website. Great article on the choice of going with a host or going Independent, new passport regulations and a look at one of our successful graduates. Our chat rooms begin again next week. Chat rooms are one evening ( next week it is Wednesday) from 9-10 PM EDT - our guest speaker will be Mark Polzin from Travel Guard and he will be giving us great tips on selling travel insurance and showing agents how they can add to their commissions. Career Quest is not like other travel schools - we provide educational enhancements and give you the opportunity to network with fellow students and today's preferred suppliers before you even graduate.

When Did We Stop Listening?

How many times per day do you have to ask someone to repeat what they said? Not because they were whispering or slurred their words but because you simply were not listening. And what is sad, is even when we are listening, we aren't hearing what our clients are asking or saying. I admit, it happens to me. I hear the same questions every day and I give the same response every time. So many times, I am answering before the prospective student has even asked the question. Each client deserves 100% of your attention. When you pick up the phone or sit down with someone, turn off everything you are doing or thinking and concentrate on them. Let them talk, jot down what they are saying and then when they are done, ask them questions in order to discuss their options. You can cut your "selling" time in half if you just start by listening to your clients.

Landing Clients

Back in the 90's, travel agent's just had to show up for work and the clients walked through the doors or found their telephone number in the yellow pages. Not today ... clients aren't looking in the yellow pages ... they are online comparing costs and researching vacation ideas. Today's travel agent, whether home based or retail, has to go out and create their own business. For home based agents, this is your business and as the "boss" its up to you to get out there and make your community aware of your existence - it may be more challenging to be a success but the results may be more rewarding. The Career Quest curriculum does not only cover the basics of the travel industry but we examine the "business side" of a home based agency with business and marketing plans plus monthly chat rooms to network with other students and graduates on marketing ideas. Enroll today ... and get your business started.

Travelers Go Back To An Agent

At the recent Travel Mart Show held in Las Vegas, the presentations focused on how the pendulum has swung in favor of travel agents. Below are some of the thoughts and ideas presented (Modern Agent/Editor's Forum): "Today's consumers are time-starved and overwhelmed by choice. That means that travel counselors need to be experts in both travel experiences and in their customers." "Today's consumers, especially the baby boomers, who continue to change industries as they enter their mature years -- are demanding. They're well informed and give agents just two minutes maximum to sell themselves to them. But when the agents satisfy these customers, they come back again and again, and their agents become specialists in their travel." They compared travelers to investors: 31% consider themselves delegators - they hand off work to a pro 19% consider themselves complete soloist 51% consider theemselves validators - they want to do their own research but want an expert to validate that research and help them with their decision-making. Home-based agents have the biggest advantage in these scenarios. They are entrepreneurs and control how they operate their business. The smart agent embraces the research their clients have done, and elevates their services to a level that ensures the client will come back again and again.

Excitement at Sea

This morning NBC Today Show did a segment on the Cruise Industry and I thought I would share some of their points: There is a cruise for everyone ... Royal Caribbean's Freedom of the Sea is the world's largest cruise ship featuring a climbing wall, wave rider and ice skating rink onboard. Cunard's Queen Mary II offers luxury from top to bottom for their guests plus you can take your dog with you on transatlantic voyages. Remember drive ins? Princess now offers "Movie Under the Stars" every night on the top deck of their cruise ships. Bowling anyone? NCL's new ships now offer bowling at sea. For a cruise, smaller and more intimate ... check out the Sea Dream Yacht Club. No matter what your clients like to do, there is a cruise for them.

Motivation - The Key To A Succesful Home Based Agency

Lack of Motivation is considered one of the top ten mistakes made by a Home-Based Business Owner. Working from home, although it may sound great, takes will power. It is easy to get distracted. If you are serious about your business, treat it like a business. Have set hours and make yourself To-Do lists every day. Even if the phone is not ringing, there is lots you can be doing to increase sales. If you do go out, make sure you are a walking billboard for your business.

Zoning Laws for Your Home Based Business

Before starting your home based business, it is necessary to research your city's zoning laws. Zoning laws may be determined by your city, boro or township where you live. Find out which government body maintains your zoning laws and familiarize yourself with these regulations. If your are planning to have a home based travel agency with no employees and no walk-up trade, then chances are zoning questions will never be an issue for you. Zoning problems occur with home based businesses deal with the public from their home increasing traffic in the area and causing parking problems in the neighborhood. There are alot of steps you need to take to set up your home based travel agency correctly and that is where Career Quest can be your best friend. Part of our Home Based Programs includes instruction on "How to Set Up a Home Based Business". We also conduct chat rooms and conference calls to address issues that you will face as an owner. There are alot of "scam" operations out there. If any host agency tells you that you do not need training - don't listen to them or you will end of wasting your time and money plus you will put your clients in jeopardy.

Basic Rules when Using E-mail for your Business

1. Respond as quickly as possible - if you are not able to monitor your e-mails throughout the day then set an auto-response message. 2. End each e-mail response with your full name, agency name and telephone number. Don't make the client guess who is e-mailing them. 3. Be personal in your e-mail message - use the client's first name. 4. Use their name again at the end of the message. Let's them know you know who you are communicating with. 5. Keep your message short. Most people do not have time to read pages of information. Get right to the point and if you need the client to respond to you - make sure you tell them.

I've traveled around the world - Why do I need Career Quest?

I am asked this question every day and I give the same response every time. Your travel experience is key to your success in helping clients select a destination and see the most while on their vacation BUT do you know the how, where, when and why's when it comes to booking the entire reservation? And what if something happens while your clients are traveling - how will you help them? Yesterday, I got a short note from one of our graduates and I thought I would share it with you ... "Your program is very user-friendly, informative and focused on materials for success. I had a little knowledge about everything but nothing that made me feel comfortable enough to say I am a knowledgeable travel agent. This course gave me the background and confidence to be able to tell my clients - I can take care of all your travel plans for you. Thank you Career Quest!!" (Eileen - Sun City West, AZ)

Top Mistake Home-Based Business Owners Make

In a recent article by All Business, they listed the ten top mistakes Home-Based Business Owners Make and over the next several weeks I thought it would be a good idea to review them. #1 - Trying to fit a round business into a square house. Will a home-based travel agency work in your home? Look around ... do you have equipment (computer, printer, fax, phone etc) enough work space and storage for brochures and inventory? Service-based businesses which is what a home-based travel agency would be classified, are typically easier to fit comfortably into a home but your home has to be able to accommodate the business. Be realistic when you are thinking of starting your business at home - the right setting will help you to be a success.

Consumer Research Outnumbers Bookings

Consumers continue to conduct travel research but the those actually booking their own arrangemetns online continues to decline. People enjoy surfing the net to find the best "air fare" but surveys show travelers still prefer to use an agent when it comes to booking their vacation packages. Embrace your clients time and effort doing research for their next trip! It saves you time. When they call you they already have selected a destination and have an idea of what type of vacation they want to book. All the agent has to do is fine tune the vacation to meet the needs of the client and secure the booking.

I'm Going to Quit My Job and be a Home Based Travel Agent!

Every time I hear that statement I cringe. Even if you want a full time career as a travel agent, there are two points you must keep in mind. First, it takes at least 6-9 months to build up a clientele basis. Yes, this friend and that friend may tell you they want you to book their next trip but then what? Where is your next client coming from? And most people only take one or two big vacations per year. You have to have a wide variety of clients who travel at different times of the year to be successful. Second, a home based travel agent earns commission on the vacations they book BUT you do not receive this commission until the client has traveled. So although you may have just booked 6 cruises if they are not sailing until February 2008 - you are not paid until February or March 2008. Don't quit your job until you have all your eggs in one basket. Why put financial burdens on yourself during the first year? Use money from your current job to fund your new business and remember, when you are out in the working world every person within 3 feet of you is a potential client. Start spreading the word that you are starting your own business. Get people's e-mail addresses now so when you are ready you could send out an e-mail blast announcing your opening.

Behavior on a Plane

It seems every week there is a news story that a passenger was removed from a flight due to a disturbance they were causing. Some instances can not be helped like a child crying but outright "bad" behavior on the part of an adult is just not acceptable. I read an article the other day in regards to this and the author hit the nail on the head. He wrote "you were not raised in a barn and your parents had to try to instill some type of manners in you during your childhood ... when you are on a plane, remember what you learned as a child and when all else fails - behave the same way you would in church."

Ever-Changing Role of the Travel Agent

There was an excellent article in USA Today this week regarding the changing role of the Travel Agent. Here are some of the excellent points: Back ten years ago it was still a glamourous world and people became travel agents to wee the world and get free airline tickets. Now being a travel agent has become a real career. The biggest change is the rise of the "Specialist". Ten years ago, everyone was a generalist but today because the traveler is much more self-sufficient, the travel agent plays a consulting role. The focus of the business has changed. Now the travel agent, especially the home based agent manages travel, not sells airline tickets. This new breed of traveler needs a savy agent to execute services customers are willing to pay for to ensure the best vacation possible. If you are looking for a new career, and want to develop a business on your own, travel could be in your future. The first step is a good education and that is where Career Quest can help. Take time to review our website and if you have any questions, send us an e-mail or give us a call.

Use Your Head When Traveling

If you need to amuse yourself at the airport, stand back and watch the people going through the security lines. You certainly can pick out the "novice" travelers. Belts, necklaces, strap shoes ... they should have two lines at security - one for experienced travelers and one for the not-so experienced travelers. Keep your attire casual and comfortable. If you want to dress it up - add a nice jacket or sweater to your jeans and knitwear. It's nice to have a cover-up if its cold on the plane. Don't wear new shoes and although sandals are comfortable, your feet could get cold. If you are traveling with children, pack a carry on bag for each child. That helps when you need to find something the child is asking for. Just use your head ... pack your patience ... relax and smile ... You're on vacation!

A Goal WIthout a Plan is Just a Wish!

I was driving down the street the other day and saw this "thought" on the front of one of our local businesses. Its a short, simple statement but carries a big message. Every day I talked with individuals who want to start their own business. Some absolutely do have a goal and have taken the time to do research and make a plan. Others, have no clue, and these are the people that usually find themselves making decisions before they are ready. As with any new career, do your homework. Read what you can about the pros and cons of starting a home based business. Think about the various travel products - will you specialize in one particular area or sell everything? Visit some Host Agency websites to see how they operate, who their suppliers are and what they do for their agents. Most important, take some time to think about where you will find your clients. You now have a goal - you have a "preliminary" plan of how to accomplish this goal, now its time for the first step - Training! Now its time to decide which Career Quest program you should enroll in. On our website, under Training, New Agent, you will find a list of the programs we offer, a course description and outline of the subjects you will cover. Carefully compare these to see which program best meets your needs. If you can't decide - pick up the phone and call us at 1-800-452-3198. If you are serious about this business, from Day One, do it right!

Beware of Airline Bumping This Summer

WIth a busy summer season forecast for the airline industry, your chances of getting bumped increase. Airlines overbook flights by 30% which is normally not a problem with the no-show rate except airlines have cut down on the number of flights to destinations which makes no shows fewer. The airlines are also finding that less people volunteer to give up their seats. Is there anything you can do? Definitely print your boarding pass 24 hours prior to departure. That ensures you are checked in for the flight. Make sure you are in the gate area at least 15 minutes prior to the flight boarding. If you have not checked in or not in the gate area 10 minutes prior to a flight's scheduled departure, your seat can be given away. Most important this summer. pack alot of patience.

Do Clients Respect a Travel Agent Working From Home?

I get this question all the time and my answer is always the same ... it all comes down to your "professional image". Your clients are looking for your expertise and could care less where you work. From day one, you must create and nurture your professional image. And your image starts with you and your own attitude about yourself and your business. Ask yourself these questions. Do you consider yourself a qualified travel consultant? Do you provide the highest level of customer service to your clients? Are you prompt with call backs? Are you out in the community promoting your business? Most home based agents do not have their clients come to their home - they go to their clients and advertise this fact as part of their service. Today, everyone's schedule is so hectic that meeting your clients during their lunch break or dropping off their documents at their house after work is a service they really enjoy. When you introduce yourself or answer a call, remember first and foremost, you are a professional travel consultant. If you are asked where your office is located ... ask them where they would like to meet - that is part of your service. Probably one of the best features of being a Career Quest student is we never "kick" you out - not even after you graduate. We encourage all our graduates to stay in contact with us and participate in our monthly chat rooms or conference calls. If you are already working as an agent, Career Quest now offers workshops that focus on specific niche markets - again, small groups to encourage networking. Check out our next workshop on our website.

TIA Predicts Record Number of Summer Trips

Although gas prices continue to rise, the TIA predicts record numbers for summer travel. They expect air travel to be stronger than auto travel. The top activity most travelers will be looking for is that "white sandy" beach but most also are looking for sport activities like hiking or biking. The TIA also predicts travelers will be looking for all-inclusive resorts and cruises as they offer the most for their money. It's not too late ... some of our programs only take 4-5 weeks to complete ... you could have your home based business up and running this summer.

What is the Number One Reason People Choose a Travel Career?

This is a no-brainer - the number one reason - they love to travel! And most marketing instructors will tell you "sell what you love". So let's try this question... what is the number one reason a home based travel agent is NOT successful? This too is a no-brainer. They forget that it is a business. From the start of your home based business you have to focus on the business side of your travel agency. Yes, researching and booking vacations is the fun part, but if you do not run your agency as a business, you will not succeed. To quote my good friend Bob Abrames "no other business will provide you with the exposure to the ways of the world as this one will. No other business provides the rewards and benefits that this industry does." Just remember from the start ... this is a business and you are the boss!

Emerging Hotspot Destination - Las Terrenas

According to TripAdvisor, Las Terranas is one of the hottest new destnations in 2007. Do you know where Las Terrenas is? It is located 245 km east of Puerto Plata on the island of the Dominican Republic. The city can only be accessed by two mountain roads but once you arrive, they say you will never want to leave. Spectacular views, beautiful white sand beaches and a Mediterranean-influenced atmosphere await tourists. The streets are lined with outdoor cafes and plenty of arts and crafts stores. Activities include diving, snorkling, kite boarding and horseback riding. So if you are looking for a new destination for your clients or your own family vacation, do some research on Las Terrenas.

Is being a Home Based Agent a good choice?

Are you thinking about becoming a home based agent, part time or full time? Do you wonder if working from home is just a "passing fancy" in the travel industry? Well, here is your answer! In a recent survey, ASTA found that the number of home based agents has doubled with cruise and tour sales up more than 25%. Probably my greatest concern when someone is considering a career as a home based agent is that they think it is easy. Hey, stay at home and wait for all the clients to flood to your front door. WRONG! As a home based agent, you are a business owner. You wear all the hats - accountant, sales, marketing, reservationist - the success or failure of your home based agency is in your hands. If you are serious about starting a home based travel business - do it right. Don't just jump in. Learn the basics of travel, set-up your business correctly, and select a good host agency. Learn to network ...while completing our training program, you have opportunities to network with fellow students, graduates, suppliers and our staff. Once you select a host agency, build a repore with them. Join travel organizations like the ASTA and the OSSN. If you do it correctly, you can be a very successful home based travel agent.
